6.0 INTRODUCTION: (0.32)

6.0 INTRODUCTION
In Section 6 we will learn how to create basic geometric patterns, how to recolor your patterns and how to apply your patterns including scaling, rotating and moving. We will also learn how to create a weave to compliment your pattern. The total time for Section 6 is 25 minutes.

6.1 GEOMETRIC PATTERNS: DOTS (3.45)

6.1 GEOMETRIC PATTERNS: DOTS
To follow along, download the Lesson 6 file in the downloads section of the site under “Lesson Files”. Learn how to adjust basic dot patterns already available in Illustrator. You will also learn how to create your own.

6.2 GEOMETRIC PATTERNS: LINES (1.44)

6.2 GEOMETRIC PATTERNS: LINES
Learn how to adjust basic line patterns already available in Illustrator in addition to creating your own.

6.3 PATTERN OPTIONS PALETTE (2.23)

6.3 PATTERN OPTIONS PALETTE
Use the Pattern Option Palette to create a repeat pattern. Only available in Illustrator CS6 and CC.

6.4 STRIPES & PLAIDS (2.50)

6.4 STRIPES & PLAIDS
Create a stripe and plaid with this very simple technique.

6.5 COLORWAYS: MAGIC WAND (1.17)

6.5 COLORWAYS: MAGIC WAND
Use the magic wand tool to recolor your artwork.

6.6 COLORWAYS: COLOR GUIDE (3.02)

6.6 COLORWAYS: COLOR GUIDE
Use the color guide to help pick colors for your artwork and recolor easily.

6.7 APPLYING PATTERNS (4.42)

6.7 APPLYING PATTERNS
Learn to scale, rotate and move your patterns.

6.8 WEAVES: PLAIN (2.58)

6.8 WEAVES: PLAIN
Create a plain weave and apply it to your pattern.

6.9 WEAVES: TWILL & MORE (2.02)

6.9 WEAVES: TWILL & MORE
Review how to create a twill weave and other weaves such as a houndstooth weave, satin weave and more.

6.10 COLOR SEPARATION PART 1 (2.40)

6.10 COLOR SEPARATION PART 1
In lesson 6.10 we will begin the process of setting up our artwork for a screen printer. Here we will learn how to pick Pantone colors and use the Pathfinder “Trim” option to ‘punch out’ any overlapping artwork.

6.11 COLOR SEPARATION PART 2 (4.21)

6.11 COLOR SEPARATION PART 2
Here we will take the ‘trimmed” art from lesson 6.10 and separate each color onto a different layer.

8.0 INTRODUCTION (0.24)

8.0 INTRODUCTION
In Section 8 we will learn how to work with Raster files types, such as JPGS & GIFS. We will create Raster swatches, re-color raster art, crop, convert raster art into vector art and more. The total time for Section 8 is 19:33 minutes.

8.1 LINKED VS EMBED (1:44)

8.1 LINKED VS EMBED
To follow along, download the Lesson 8 Part 1 file in the downloads section of the site under “Lesson Files”. Here you will review how to import a raster image into your file.
Notes:
Linking a File:
-This is helpful to reduce your file size and to not slow down your computer while working.
-If you move OR delete the source files that you are linking to, you will receive an error when you open your Illustrator file. You can always re-link if you moved the file. If you deleted the file you may be out of luck!
-When sending someone an Illustrator file with linked images, be sure to also send the source files.
-When a file is linked there is an X across it when selected.

Embedding a File:
-You must embed images to create pattern swatches from them.

8.2 RASTER SWATCHES (2:01)

8.2 RASTER SWATCHES
We will create a repeat pattern swatch from the raster houndstooth pattern.
Note: You may encounter a raster image that does not have the entire repeat (i.e. a photo you took of a fabric swatch and did not get a large enough section) OR the fabric was not flat. In these 2 cases you will NOT be able to find a perfect repeat.

8.3 EDIT RASTER COLORS (2:45)

8.3 EDIT RASTER COLORS
Learn to create multiple colorways from a raster image without having to go into Photoshop. Note: many times, you will not get exact colors but only variations of original color way.

8.4 RASTER & VECTOR PATTERNS (1:40)

8.4 RASTER & VECTOR PATTERNS
Combine a raster image and vector artwork to create a repeat pattern swatch with some texture.

8.5 CROPPING (2:08)

8.5 CROPPING
To follow along, download the Lesson 8 Part 2 file in the downloads section of the site under “Lesson Files”. Here we can crop a jpeg. This technique is different than creating a clipping mask that we learned in a previous tutorial. *Note if you are using the latest version of Illustrator this option is located in FILE – EXPORT – SAVE FOR WEB (Legacy)

8.6 PLACEMENT PRINT (3:24)

8.6 PLACEMENT PRINT
Sometimes a repeat pattern won’t work for your design. Here we can use the clipping mask function to create a placement print.

8.7 IMAGE TRACE (3:12)

8.7 IMAGE TRACE
Learn to convert a raster image into a fully vector image that you can recolor, move vector points etc.

8.8 SAVING A PNG FILE (2.35)

8.8 SAVING A PNG FILE
In this video we will remove the background of a raster image by saving it as a PNG file with a transparent background.*Note if you are using the latest version of Illustrator this option is located in FILE – EXPORT – SAVE FOR WEB (Legacy)
