How long should one sketch take?

My students often ask me this question and there is no one right answer.  It really all depends on the complexity of the sketch as you can see in the examples below.  A simple t-shirt will take a lot less time than something with more detail like the jacket.  An employer will expect that you can sketch in a timely manner as you will likely have many cads to complete.
A couple tips for gaining speed when sketching:
  • -Use your key commands!
  • -Modify old sketches.  If you already have a similar silhouette use that and modify it instead of starting from scratch.
  • -Sketch smart.  Always analyze the parts of your garment before drawing it and decide what areas will have fill vs stroke.
